Maxine Masterfield An Apology
October 31st, 2008|
I have apologized several times.. Judy nor the juror were to blame for the outcome of the exhibit. It was my mistake. I said ok to the juror’s request for doubling up on artists work. At the time I wasn’t aware of the rule in the prospectus.(it is not in out by-laws).in fact, in the past, when I juried Kentucky and the Mid-West I choose an artists work because of their style..which many times meant two were accepted instead of one. I think this is what Polly had in mind. We learn from our mistakes and I am sorry this seem to be a big one..what a way to “retire” from my position as founder and director of such a good society…with a goof. I am sure the next director, Mary Ann Beckwith will be more aware and it won’t happen again. As for returning fees, I think the expenses are so great that would be nearly impossible..There were awards given, a workshop, and a catalog..that pretty much takes care of the fees.We run on a tight budget. Please don’t give up on I-Sea because of my unintentional error..it has taken so many years to get it rolling and would be a shame to lose it…am I forgiven???Maxine Masterfield

ISEA 17TH ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION DARLIA HOBBS DISSATISFIED WITH JUDGING
October 30th, 2008Darlia Hobbs calls for a response from the officers of ISEA as to why they let the judge, Polly Hammett, make her own rules instead of following the rules setforth by ISEA.
I agree with Darlia’s letter, and I am including it here.
James Haddock, and Martha Howell, and ISEA officers and members:
RE: ISEA 17th Annual Juried Exhibition
Many, many of us were totally disappointed and totally unsatisfied with the judge of our show accepting 2 paintings (each) from 13 artists, thus keeping 13 other members from being able to participate in this show. But - - what’s even worse, is that our own president of ISEA and other officers chose NOT to uphold our own by-laws and show rules regarding this. Are they telling us that we “peons” don’t count? Or, that they just want our money and don’t care about the integrity of our show or the respect of our members.
Was Polly Hammet given proper show guidelines??? If not - they could have corrected the situation immediately - there was plenty of time. If she was - it was their job to “make it right.”
Like many people, I had reservations to stay 3 nights to see the demos and the reception in Houston - Hurricane “Ike” changed everyone’s plans. Thank heavens, my “super husband” promised to take me to see the show later. We were able to make the trip to see the show on October 4th. The artwork was uplifting and inspiring until I started seeing the many “twins” - one artist with 2 VERY “look-a-like” paintings.
I admire and respect these artists - and I know some of them. But there’s NO EXCUSE for putting 2 of their works in this show when the rules say, “ONLY ONE” per artist!
After I first heard of this fiasco, I talked with Tina Greenlee, who agreed that it was totally unfair to the ISEA members. We spoke at length so I could pass on my own, and others’, adamant sentiments. She promised to pass it on to Maxine, as well as the other officers so they would all know how so many of us felt.
If there had been nothing but shabby work left to choose from, perhaps I could, at least, understand. But I know that was not the case!!
Officers - please talk to us! We deserve a little understanding. This “silent treatment” feels like a cover-up. We realize everyone can’t get accepted into the show - that’s NOT our point.
With over 300 entries - that’s over $12,000. Please take the time and understanding to respond to us.
Thank you for your time and work.
Darlia Hobbs

Another Response regarding the ISEA 17th Annual Juried Exhibition
October 10th, 2008A response from Lee.
James,
Thanks for the kind words on my web site. It was easy after I finally found a service that could give me the look I was after. www.impactfolios.com They cater exclusively to the creative arts. I had the site up and running in about 4 hours time and had it polished and fined tuned in about another 4. A $50.00 set up fee and $20.00/ month gets you going. They made it easy with a step by step recipe for putting it together. The only problem I have had is getting music to play. I hope to have that one solved soon. I have had the domain name almost since domain names existed waiting to give it life and the only thing else I needed was good pictures of my work.
I see the folks at ISEA are back tracking a bit on the 17th juried exhibition. In retrospect I think you had a good point. Hopefully they will correct the issue next year and the show will be better for it.
